European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research

Acronym COST
Programme Owner Intergovernmental framework for the coordination of nationally funded research at European level. The decision making body is the Committee of Senior Officials. The framework consists of 34 member states and 1 cooperating state.
  Direct contact points are the COST National Coordinators.
Budget National funding of more than 2 billion EUR per year
  On average 80 000 EUR per Action (depending on size and activity) – used to cover coordination costs. Research activity is funded nationally.
  Budget consists of the research framework programme of the European Community and COST Fund (national) contributions.
Deadline Continuous- Open call (Each Technical Committee may set „deadlines” for its own domain- check on the web!) One collection date / year
Target Groups

  •   Main goal: Coordination of national research activities in Europe through support of networks.
    Topics Actions (=networks) : „bottom up”-
      COST doesn’t have specific research activity topics, any scientific technical area can be supported, to create or join an Action the National Coordinator has to be contacted.
      The member countries participate on an "à la carte" principle.

  • contribution to the participation of so called „near neighbour” countries etc.
  •   General Support Action Grant (GASG) – up to 2000 EUR per annum – for the general support of Action management (common web site, secretarial support and preparatory actions).
      “Pay as you go system” and Annual Grants – two sub grants; 65% starting grant and 35% according to the real needs of the Action, maximum 15% overhead.
