VIM - Flanders Institute for Sustainable Mobility

VIM

The Flemish Institute for Mobility (VIM) is a non-profit organization that would like to develop into a platform in Flanders in the field of mobility. In this platform, the 3 parties (companies, government and research institutes) are united in a permanent and consistent way. The Institute would like to formulate concrete answers to problems and subjects, introduced by the different parties, with respect to mobility in all its aspects.

The mission of the VIM is clear: strengthening the mobility sector in Flanders by means of innovation and research, by means of transfer of knowledge and by means of support of target audiences, in relation with the directions concerning sustainable mobility.

The prosperity and growth in Flanders depends on many factors. One of them, and certainly not the least important one, is mobility. Hence the crucial question: How do we manage to improve and modernize our current transport systems without increasing the negative consequences of the ever-growing demand for mobility?

Many authorities, researchers, institutes,… try to formulate answers to this question. That often occurs from their own point of view or from their own needs.

As it operates like an interface, the Flemish Institute for Mobility would like to unite all its partners, stimulate and organize tasks, and valorise gathered knowledge.

This approach pertains to the strategy of the current Flemish government with respect to poles of competence. This means that the investigations that are available in Flanders, are developed, and also brought onto the market.

Somehow or other, many companies and institutes are occupied with mobility. The VIM would like to acquaint all these actors with each other to exchange or to valorise the existing expertise, to look at new ideas from different points of view and to use them in research projects with in view: “generating new marketable products”. Like this, the VIM tries to be a value added in the development of knowledge economy in Flanders.

Special interest goes to companies and institutes that operate in the following areas: study and advice, firms of contractors that are operating in infrastructure works, information technology and communications and telecommunication, GIS and Geodata, microelectronics, transport, data mining and data management, environmental technology, Internet security

The VIM offers its members four services. Being an interface, the Flemish Institute for Mobility would like to set up and guide research programs. Furthermore it would like to help with the co-ordination of joint offers. The results of the research are practical, concrete and applicable either in the companies or being a spin-off in new established entities. As far as internal communication is concerned, the VIM will unite the members regularly and inform them via newsletters and an interactive website. As far as external communication is concerned, the members will be present at fairs, congresses and colloquia via the VIM.

Finally, the VIM also promotes the interests of the joined members. This happens via a representation at the international forum, but also in the follow-up of quotation requests.
