"The Competence Centre OphthalmoInnovation Thueringen was established in 2000 with the aim of conducting intensive research and development work into systems for diagnosis and therapy of the most common eye complaints:

• ametropia

• grey cataract

• glaucoma

• diseases of the retina

The main areas of our research and development work to combat these problems include preventive microcirculation diagnosis of the ocular fundus, application of innovative optoelectronic techniques at cellular level, and new laser technologies for high-precision tissue manipulation, along with innovative network approaches for efficient diagnosis and treatment procedures.

Internationally leading suppliers of key technologies such as Carl Zeiss Meditec AG are integrated in the center. Small and medium-size companies utilize synergies in order to successfully enter the market or to achieve a return on investment more efficiently. Friedrich Schiller University in Jena provides top-level clinical expertise, and alongside conventional treatment methods is also engaged in applied research on the front and rear section of the eye. Through close cooperation with manufacturers of medical equipment and medical experts, Ilmenau University of Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena offer high practically oriented innovative potential for direct implementation in teaching and research and are thus important centers of expertise.
