One of the greatest challenges within biotechnology and medicine is to utilise the newly discovered information about the human genome in order to investigate the corresponding proteins (the proteome). Proteins have important roles within various fields, such as medicine (drugs and drug-targets), diagnostics (biomarkers) and biotechnology (binding proteins, catalysers (enzymes)). More than 90% of all drugs are aimed at proteins.

In close collaboration with Swedish companies concentrating on life sciences, the Center will run R&D in the field of protein technology based on proteome information such as that generated by the Swedish Human Proteome Resource (HPR) project.
