The European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Consumers has launched a call for tenders to create a European system of reference laboratories for pathogens for humans.
The aim is to seek and provide rational bases for such a system with a view to the notifiable diseases listed in European Commission Decision No 2119/98. The research activities involved must also include structural, functional, technical, legislative and economic aspects. This entails giving, after analysis, an overall view of the current situation of reference laboratories in the different Member States, including important features for their development and their networking at national and international levels. This last point is a prerequisite for satisfactorily completing research and responses in the event of epidemic outbreaks.
