Introduction

Even though CRCs are usually regionally rooted, they work in international consortia and are part of international projects. Successful CRCs are nodes in international networks, for example as project managers, organizers of international events or members of international boards and organisations. Moreover, they are part of the international division of R&D&I labour, contribute to regional profiles and regional attractiveness and, therefore, players in global competition.

However, international cooperation does not only involve chances but also risks - IP violations, brain drain or the dilution of regional profiles are only a few buzzwords in this context. Thus, international cooperation appears to be a necessity that has to be well prepared and continuously monitored.
